A happy hump day hello!
If there is one thing I've enjoyed fondling since my love affair with paper began back in ought-2, it's vellum. I made so many cards using painted vellum, it's not funny and I spent hours on the console being consoled when they stopped making that stuff. Sniff. Oh, stop, I still have some in my stash, so you'll be seeing it again.
Needless to say, I am delighted to see vellum being "discovered" all over Bloggerville right now. One wonderful blog talking about it this week is the Papertrey Ink Make It Monday challenge, where Lizzie shows us how to soften patterns with vellum layovers.
Here is my card Numeruno:
I pretty much CASEd Lizzie's card using one of the PTI word text dies. Lizzie used "Mom" and I used "Birthday."
I love this sweet NBUS balloon paper from SU that I used for my patterned background. I popped my vellum focus pocus up on foam stilts like Lizzie did and I even tossed in some matching sequints to make mine a shaker card. Well, it turns out some vellum not only softens patterns, they make sequins invisible. So, not wanting to waste them, I sprung them to use another day when I'll use one of my lighter weight vellum sheets that are easier to see through.
Aside note: I used a transfer sheet (basically a large Xyron sheet) on the back of the text block die cut which applies adhesive. That's all fine and good, but even after lots of burnishing with a sheet of nonstick paper and my pants (and a lot of picknitting), there are still little boogers of adhesive stuck to the letters. I don't like that and I wonder if you have any secret remedy for it?
I mean beside wodka which does make them less noticeable.

The small star is from GKW, stamped in SU almost amethyst. The sediment is a NBUS die, also from W&W, called "The Big, the Bold, the Party," which I inlaid into my vellum banner. The banner is cut using an MFT die.
Wait. What? You inlaid in vellum? Thin, flimsy, pesky vellum? How you did that?
Well, to be fair, it was Hammy's idea. He really loves vellum, too, and we hadn't tried inlaying with it before. It works like normal diecut inlays. I first ran the die and clear vellum through the BS and carefully removed the diecut. I next ran the die and pink vellum through and removed the diecut.
Then I laid a piece of clear packing tape behind the negative space on the clear vellum. It's a nice width so it's great for making a banner and it gave my diecute some adhesive to stick to as it nestled back into the negative space. Plus, it's a great way to add a little stiffness to the banner without obscuring the view underneath.
It did work very well, so high tens to the hamster. Gotta love that guy.

Backyard Busyness
I'll leave you with the latest news from the wild kingdom that is the Playhouse backyard. Just as Rufous took off (yes, he's gone for sure), this little guy appeared. He's just one of dozens of house finches that we see every day, but the Mister had me come running (okay, waddling) with the camera when he saw this one yesterday:

Much to our surprise he took off with no apparent problems! Go him! Flying without a tail makes steering difficult, but thankfully tail feathers do grow back fairly quickly.

Beautiful!!! Those little adhesive boogers is one reason I don't use the Xyron as much as I'd like - I have a booger eraser that works fairly well (can't recall where I got it from) but, hopefully, someone will have a better answer! Vellum - I happen to have a TON of it - different patterns, weights, colors ~ hmmm - maybe a package should be on it's way to you?? Hugs!!! Christi

ReplyDeleteI love both your cards but the star bursts the best. Love love your inlaid die cut on the vellum. Wonderful colours. Now I looked and looked and no matter how hard I looked I could not see a heart on the party card. Am i going blind as well as deaf or maybe its just me.
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever idea to use the packing tape to do an inlaid die! Love the end result. On the top card, I bought some double sided adhesive. For the more intricate dies it seems to help. Scrapbook Adhesives sells it. Love how the vellum softens the vibrant colors. Gorgeous cards Darnell.

Beautiful cards Darnell! I've always loved the softness that vellum gives to a card, but struggled with attaching it. I also saw the techniques you mentioned from Lizzie and thought I'd have a go too - great minds, and all that - but using clear packing tape behind was truly inspired and I now regret- only recently - giving mine away . . . Oh, well, off to buy another roll!! Nearly forgot, thanks for the heads up about the FMS shout out, the linky wasn't showing them when I popped over! Have a lovely day/evening! Hazel xx

I continue to find it fascinating that everything comes round to popularity again. I don't think it's bad at all, just fascinating. And gives us a chance to try it out again. Love your vellum cards, Darnell! On adhesive boogers. What I have done was take an embossing tool with a small ball and run it along the edge of the cut out before removing it from the backing piece. That got a lot, but if there was more, I'd do the same when it was off the backing piece and I was holding it. Not sure if this will help you. Oh my goodness, what a sight that must have been for the poor little bird. Good for him for still being able to fly. Thanks for sharing. Sorry for such a long reply!

ReplyDeleteI adore your two cards with these great vellum techniques Darnell. I have to admit vellum is something I don't use a lot but it looks very pretty so must remedy that. I use an awful lot of photo glue which rubs off the card and doesn't mark but sometimes even that is difficult to remove from little nooks and crannies. I love your photo of the cute finch minus his tail feathers. Perhaps he had a fracas with a cat and left his tail behind whilst escaping! x

The stencilled card is wonderful and I had to enlarge it to get a closer look at your inlay, but I couldn't see the amethyst heart so I must have hit the wodka too early again.

Your cards are both lovely...oh and for the extra adhesive...an eraser (not that brownish crumbly kind a white one or a pink one, or a rubber one)...comes right off.

ReplyDeleteHammy is on a roll, hopefully not stuck to the tape roll tho. I love the idea of inlaid vellum, off to have a play your card is gorgeously inspiring. I use my ek success powder to make the shouldn't be sticky there sticky bit less sticky then picknit them off. Patience is required as it sometimes takes a few goes but they do bug me... and I like the picknitting, nearly as good as popping out the die bits

Oh the bright and cheerful colors. Honestly I have not used vellum, I have some, but have not used it. I think I will start with embossing a word and laying it over the colored paper.

Well as I always say, wodka makes the world go round! :) I'm not sure how to get the boogers off either. But I do know how amazing your super cute party colors look on these cards! And give hammy a high twenty for that inventive way to inlay vellum.

Does Hammy have a brother, sister or cousin? I sure could use some of that good help! I can't help with the boogers but would like to know a remedy. I'm loving the bright, fun colors and I'm ready to party for sure! Wonder how your little finch lost his tail feathers. Sure glad the rest of him stayed intact! I hate finding chunks of feathers in the yard. Pesky hawks!

ReplyDeleteHi Dippy - what beautiful cards, love them both. Regarding your stick situation (!!!) I used to use the xyron sheets but also found they left a residue which was almost impossible to get off and ruined all the hard work making the card. Then someone invented Stick It! You can get it through Ken Oliver in the States - check out his YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQ43O4VGKLg - fabulous stuff and it really works. Love your braveness with the vellum, can't believe you inlaid that die cut, it looks amazing. BTW something nice arrived yesterday but keeping it safe til Saturday.

Wow, what fun, festive and colorful cards Auntie! I know about those glue buggers and they can be a pain in the butt. lol Next time go around whatever you put Xyron on with a stylus-you are outlining basically. Then when you pull off the backer sheet, there shouldn't be any of those glue buggers. But for your card now, take an adhesive remover to it. That should take off all those little glue buggers that want to hang around. Oh that sweet birdie, it's not nice to not have a tail! But lucky for him they do grow back. He is just so sweet looking! If this keeps up Hammy will have to have his own blog to share his creations. I love vellum too and that soft, elegant look it gives. I love that you inlaid it, what a great idea. I would have been afraid to try that and it came out so pretty. Not being able to shake his tail feathers didn't seem to slow the bird down.

Your love affair with vellum is really working for you, Darnell. I just realized after seeing your birthday cut that the card I made for MIM doesn't have any PTI produce on it. :( Give Hammy a high five for me. Inlaying vellum is a great trick and one I want to try.

When I was walking Bella along the river today, I was thinking about Anita's W&W Rose die-cut card with the pink vellum and wondering about inlaying with vellum itself. Spooky!! I'm only just jumping on the vellum bandwagon and loving it I must say. I love the colours of your first card. Would love one of these large die-cuts in my stash! And you in-laid vellum....well, genius!! Loving that stencil too, such cool patterns. No tail feathers? How odd, maybe they ended up in the mouth of a very perturbed cat??

ReplyDeleteVell..um...I gotta say...amazing work pal! I'm sure there will be a whole whack of us digging out our velum...which shouldn't be too hard cuz we likely came across it when we were searching for the colored wire!

I had no idea a bird could fly without tail feathers! Can just imagine how p-offed the cat was with nothing more than a few feathers for a pillow!

What a genius that little guy is to come up with the idea of inlaying vellum ... add that to your packing tape ping and you have seriously awesome ... off to pack for the party! Yummy balloons ... I've tried a Zig two way pen for adhering similar die cuts ... works if it's not to liquidy ... otherwise you can imagine the mess(es)! Hugs & Bisous Bisous, Anita :)

ReplyDeleteYou are so creative, Darnell! Beautiful cards with vellum, which I've loved since the first day I saw it. Indeed it's nice when "trends" are something we know & love--LOL! I'm using Perfect Paper Adhesive for my die cuts (& anything else that needs liquid adhesive) as it dries pretty much invisible & doesn't make a mess on your hands--it's just great! I'm always disappointed when I use my Xyron--same problem you describe--so don't plan to buy any more replacement rolls.
