Hello Stamplings!
How's it going where you are? I'm finding this next phase of reopening so confusing. Please take care and continue to stay safe!
Here in the Playhouse, I'm staying put, but the fun and the distractions continue. Thank goodness. I know I would be as loony as a loony bird without it! Wait. What dya mean, how would you know the difference?!
Let's see what I have to share today.
Onefer
The brief for the stencil challenge is to make something by layering two or more stencils. Well, I'm pretty new to stencils and I'm not in the habit of thinking of them when I plan my design. Yet. So now I found out that you can actually add more fun and interest by layering another stencil image over the top of the first one, and so on, ad infinity! Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit, of course you can do that!
So I dumped all my few stencils out on my desk and let Hammy rifle through them while I leaned back and waited for something to catch my eye. When I saw how the packet of stars was layered inside their clear envelope, it was a no-brainer.
I've no idea who makes the stars, but I think the big one came from an ancient sheet of "cut out" shapes. We called them cut outs in those days. (I wish the manufacturers would all put their names directly on their stencils.) I blended DOxie inks, Hammy winked the little stars, and then I fussy cut the big star in order to pop it onto the star-embossed background. A bottom border was added for a bit more color and another card was done and dusted.
Challenges
- Addicted to Stamps and More: Clean and simple.
- CAS Stencil: Host Hilary and GD Greta. Layering stencils.
- CAS(E) This Sketch. (I honestly did not see this sketch before I made my card or I would have put my borders on top and bottom. I hope it's still close enough to enter.)
Twofer
The next thing I tackled was another new technique, this time for the CAS Mix Up where the brief is Gesso Resist. I love the look! You have to try it. I made two cards. For this one, I painted the gesso through a NBUS fern stencil from The Crafters Workshop called "Mini Ferns." Once it was dried, I sponged on DOxies in my fave colors. I stamped the "many" from my container of miscellaneous stamps and die-cut the Concord & 9th "thanks" from a snippet of glossy paper colored with alcoholic inks.
Challenges
- CAS Mix Up: Host Linda and GD Pooja. Gesso resist. Plus stamping and die-cutting.
- HLS Anything Goes With Dies.
- STAMPlorations May Stencil: Anything goes.
Threefer
This second one I did is much fainter, but I hope you can still make out the dragonfly shape. For this one, I painted gesso directly onto the stamp (from Carabelle Studio) and stamped it on the paper. Once it was dry, I sponged over it, and then I added the gold-embossed sediment, stitched frame, and Hammy chose a few clear sequints for the embellies.
Challenges
- AAA Birthday: Things with wings.
- Cardz for Galz: Birthday.
- Seize the Birthday: AG Birthday.

Enjoy your day, but please remember to continue to take care and keep your distance! LITS!*

Love your threefer! The butterfly looks so beautiful hiding in amongst the watery background. Love it Darnell! Thanks for playing at AAA Birthday, hope to see you join in with future challenges too. Stay safe and keep crafting!
ReplyDeleteThree gorgeous cards Darnell, I love how you've used your stencils.
ReplyDeleteSue xx
Two beauties! Great with the triple layering of stars on your first! And I adore the soft look of the 2nd! Keep save and enjoy little things! Hugs, Gerrina
ReplyDeleteThese are all great. I love the cards with the Gesso. I've never tried Gesso but if that's the way cards turn out then I need some. The colors you used are beautiful. [Bunny]
ReplyDeleteHi Darnell, Loving the three cards, especially the second one.
ReplyDeleteLove the little cartoon.
Hope you have a lovely day. Sue
I love all your three cards. It is the wonderful interpretation of layered stenciling on your star card. Great idea. Both of gesso resist cards are awesome. I can clear see the dragonfly. It is an amazing technique and effect to stamp with gesso.
ReplyDeleteWe are almost in normal condition in Slovenia. Stores are opening, bars are opening, doctors are working again also for "normal" healt problems. On Monday also schools will open - limited. We can travel around our country. But we are still wearing masks. Also in the bank. :-)
Stay safe and take care!
Hugs, Sonja
Wonderful cards, Darnell. It looks to be a really neat technique and I thank you for sharing and reminding of it. I'm happy to hear you are doing pretty well. Continue to stay safe! Hugs!
ReplyDeleteLove your cards, Darnell! Jo x
ReplyDeleteHi there Darnell, your cards are so beautiful, gorgeous colours and design.
ReplyDeleteScotland is still on lockdown, thankfully, England thanks to an edgit of a PM, has relaxed their lockdown, much too soon, in many opinions. It's so difficult for everyone, but countries who are much wiser than the UK are having a second spikes. Anyhoo, I hope you and your family are safe and well Kate x x
I LOVE the subtle dragonfly resist image with the white frame and gold embossing - gorgeous!! Your fern and star cards came out great as well. Stencils and gesso - two things I rarely use but keep thinking I should when I see projects like yours posted!!
ReplyDeleteThree lovely stenciled cards Darnell, all beauties, I really
ReplyDeleteIkr the Gesso effect, I 'll give that a try my friend.
Three beautiful cards today Darnell, the stencilled stars are bright, bold and very striking, love the gesso resist technique you used on the others, such a lovely result! I'm going to try it myself so thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteHave a good day
xx
I'm not much of a stencil user either, Darnell, but I may have to break out the ones I have and play with them some more because these cards are awesome!! I especially love the second two with the softness of the images. So so cool! Now off to look up "Gesso Resist"...
ReplyDeleteLove how you have layered those stars and the little matching strips of colour on the edge. I am so glad you have joined us at CAS stencil this month and were persuaded to get those stencils out. I haven't tried the gesso resist technique before and I love your examples so I must try and find the time. I am staying put at home too, it is all too confusing xx
ReplyDeleteThe things I like about coming to visit you Darnell are that you make me laugh, that I always learn something new and that there's always fab eye candy :) Love the three cards: the stars upon stars upon star, with that gorgeous border; and the two gesso resists in those beautiful colours. This is a new technique to me but I can see DOxies (always the best nicknames for things here too!) are going to have to feature on my next shopping list!! Mwah to you and Hammy, Vicky x
ReplyDeleteWonderful classy designs so lovely loved your black and white caption as well just sums things up right now stay safe Love and hugs Carole x
ReplyDeleteVery pretty cards, Darnell! Love the effect that Gesso has with the sponging technique. Thank you for playing with us at Cardz 4 Galz and hope you can join us again soon.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful cards Darnell! I especially love the third one with the dragonfly
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
Marilyn❤
Layering stencils boggles my mind, Dolly! Isn't it nice when the stencils speak to you and show you how they want to go? A wonderful birthday card that would work well for a teen or a guy. Both of those are hard for me to figure out! Love, love, love your gesso fern and dragonfly! Perfect sentiments to go with that soft, ethereal look! Thanks for sharing with us at CAS Mix Up!
ReplyDeleteI rarely have time on the computer, but when I do, I never regret coming to visit you Darnell ;). "Butter my butt and call me a biscuit"...hahahaha! You're the best. ;) Lovely projects, and I've been holding off on that gesso...but maybe I'll give it a go after seeing your success! take care~
ReplyDeleteWonderful set of cards. Love the stencil on stencil card-I haven't trued this either! But looks great especially with the embossed background. And I have never used gesso but love the subtle look of your cards and the freah colours. Sending hugs x
ReplyDeleteI'm drinking in all of the wonderful techniques you've done here Darnell!! Your threefer is exceptionally pretty. Love the colors, the way you've framed the dragonfly and the golden sentiment!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea to use the large stencilled star with the smaller stars over the top Darnell, and in such bright and pretty colours, and the fern with the gesso resist looks so soft and pretty, and love the dragonfly too and with a really lovely font on your gold embossed sentiment. x
ReplyDeleteLove your stencils Darnell, isn't it funny how you look at something and voila a card is born LOL. Love your fern and dragonfly, such pretty colours, your star is just wonderful on top of the star embossing folder and with the pretty stars inside it. It's a Star card!
ReplyDeleteKeep safe and well
Faith x
Staying safe and well up here in Vancouver. Tessa is thrilled to have me home more.
ReplyDeleteLove today's Threefor! The two with the gesso resist are so lovely and soft (such pretty colours), and the starry one is after my own heart as I love stars as a theme. Must make myself figure out some stencil layering!
You really do spoil us Darnell, three cards! The star on the first one really pops and looks so dimensional, I love it.
ReplyDeleteThe gesso resist technique is such a fun one and the fern leaf and the dragonfly look beautiful. I have to admit to owning a couple of hundred stencils and yet I rarely use any - I think I need to change that soon!
Hugs, Annie xxx
I love these cards. The stars on stars is fantastic and the soft colors of the other two are so very gorgeous as well.
ReplyDeleteThree brilliant cards Darnell...clever you and hammy with those stencils. The star is my favourite as it's really right and cheery. xx
ReplyDeleteThey are all so beautiful, Darnell xoxo
ReplyDeleteLovely trio of color and design. The double-layered, stenciled stars are so vivid against that textured cardbase. Fairly twinkles right off the screen. And the gesso resists are awesome. I love that you colored over the images.
ReplyDeleteGreat cards Darnell! Your star card is so bright and fun, but I am absolutely in LOVE with your gesso cards...they are both absolutely BEAUTIFUL my friend!! I think I may have to invest in some gesso!! Hope you're staying well and healthy and that the fatigue has flown the coop!! Things are slowly starting to open here in Michigan (with and without the governor's ok!) but I am staying put...still too much at stake in my mind! Hugs. :0)
ReplyDeleteDarnell, fabulous threefer and good lessons to boot. Your stars on stars on stars is shining bright. Your gesso'd leaf still has a watercolor feel to it. Your dragon fly might be my fave of the bunch.
ReplyDeletethese are beautiful cards!
ReplyDeletehugs
Fabulous cards. Love the bright stars!
ReplyDeleteI agree companies should print on their stencils - so hard to keep track of what is what!
Three beautiful cards, and a new technique to boot! My, you're energetic and winning with the beautiful results!
ReplyDeleteYou might want to drag out your stencils more often, because what fun cards you created with the few you have! I'm also very intrigued by this idea of gesso resist, have to try it out! Thanks for linking up with Seize the Birthday, too!
ReplyDeleteAnd oops, should have also thanked you for joining us at Addicted to Stamps and More, as well!
ReplyDeleteGreat threefer Darnell, I love emboss resist and really have to pull out my gesso. Your dragon fly is my fave :)
ReplyDeleteI hope you are all keeping well, I'm buying some fabric masks on the internet getting ready for more people wandering around.
Take care
Christine
Three fabulous cards, Dolly!! I LOVE your layered, mini stars onto the large star stencil. And the dry embossed in the star background makes it a threefer on one card! Fabulous design, my friend!
ReplyDeleteYour gesso'd fern is gorgeous with the soft blue and green inks over top. I love the ethereal look of the fern. Another amazing card! And your third is just as beautiful. I definitely spotted the dragonfly right away. Another beauty! Thanks for sharing with us at CAS Stencil and CAS Mix Up! Love, Lolly
All three are stunning cards Darnell - that star one is stunning, and the gesso resist ones are just gorgeous in those soft colours.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see Hammy is still hard at work and helping you stay sane...
Our nation is gradually easing the restrictions - we are down to level 2, from level 4 (total lock down) I am still being very cautious!
Stay safe
Blessings
Maxine
Awesome cards. I love the soft colors and subtle look of the dragonfly. Love all the stars too. I don't care what the governments are saying, I am staying home. Our church is reopening but I am going to continue the virtual version. Not everyone is using the lessons and common sense instructions.
ReplyDeleteThe CAS girls are in for a treat today, Darnell. Your stencil card is bright and beautiful. Both resist cards are soft and lovely. I found this technique interesting and will be using it a lot more.
ReplyDeleteHi Darnell - a pleasure to see you at Cardz 4 Galz. I think all these cards are just gorgeous. I think I'll have to have a go at that gesso resist - the images are so pretty. Love the colours and dragronfly on the birthday card. Thanks for playing along with Cardz 4 Galz this week. Deborah, DT.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous cards! I love that double star stencil...so much fun!
ReplyDeleteA lovely threefer, love the stars and isn't it fab when inspiration presents itself in such a way!! xx
ReplyDeleteOMG, Darnell, your cards are awesome. The fern one just blew me away. As I was reading your post, I kept scrolling back to it to have another look. It's so, so beautiful. I don't know anything about using gesso, or DOxie inks, for that matter. But you did remind me to get out those Brushos and have some inky fun with them again. I love playing with those mighty little crystals and watching them grow into bursts of color. So fun!
ReplyDeleteWOW! Someone's been busy. What a gorgeous trio Darnell.
ReplyDeleteGlad that you're using your stencils, your star design looks so cool.
And it's nice to see you having fun with the gesso resist technique too. The fern is so beautiful, the colours are really pretty and delicate. And I saw the dragonfly straight away ..... I love how delicate he is in the background. Great job as always my friend ..... thank you for playing along with the CAS Mix Up and Stencil challenges xx
Wonderful cards Darnell! I love the look of the Gesso resist cards, so soft and subtle. Confusion... Well over here the rules are so conradictory we are more than confused and like you I am staying put. Stay well...Hugs
ReplyDeleteLet's try this again since the internet gremlins ate the first try. I read all your posts, both for the gorgeous eye candy and to see what you and Hammy are up to. I'm ashamed to admit that I rarely comment. But this time I HAVE to. Your two gesso cards are phenomenal! I LOVE them. And as soon as I get back to my toys I'm so going to be doing this. May even have to break down and get that fern stencil! I seldom think of stencils, perhaps because I don't have many. That may have to change! Thanks for all the inspiration and the smiles.
ReplyDeleteYour bright, shiny star is gorgeous and your gesso resist cards are fantastic! I think Distress Oxides work really well with this technique, maybe because they are creamy. Thanks for joining us and showing us your beauty at CAS Mix Up:)
ReplyDelete3 gorgeous cards Darnell, so glad you could join in at CAS Stencil too! Love the look of the gesso resist, must check that out, stay safe, Cathy x
ReplyDeleteOK Darnell you are having way too much fun with your new found love of stencilling......What wonderful effects and all so unique. I love gesso resist as it doesn't give you a pure colour but more of a wispy, artsy and striking effect x. Thanks for sharing these beauties Darnell and Luckily in Scotland we are still in lockdown and not starting to change/lift things as they are doing in England x.
ReplyDeleteA terrific trio, Darnell ... all those layered starry stars are so fun ... and how gorgeous are both gesso resists? Dreamy, dainty, delectable images ... so soft and hazy-looking ... and dressed beautifully with their bold sentiments! LYAMYTLJMA! Big hugs and bisous, Anita :)
ReplyDeleteTwo new to me techniques, ones I’ll have to try. I especially love the concept of using another stencil over a stenciled area, think of all the possibilities! It definitely made your big star even more decorative.
ReplyDeleteI definitely have to put gesso on my shopping list! My favorite is the dragonfly card, which I could see right away was a dragonfly. Love the softness of your gesso cards. If and when I do get gesso I hope I can find this technique again. Your star card is super! Popping colors and I love the star-embossed background!
ReplyDeleteCool to be trying out mew technique (I have been too) and I'm loving your cards today Darnell... love all those stars - the stencil layering worked really well... and your gesso resists are so pretty - love them both - gorgeous colours and wonderful designs with the image in the background with the sentiment the star... Glad to read you're safe in your playhouse and keeping busy.. stay safe and hugs Robyn
ReplyDeleteps way back last month in the Twofer Unbrellas challenge you asked me what brand embossing pen I used... it was so old the labelling had worn off, somehow it still works a little but today I remembered to check out an old drawer of markers and there was a green one the same (hardly used).. so the pen is a Tsukineko Emboss Dual Pen -point and chisel ends.. sorry it's taken me so long to let you know
Gorgeous cards, Darnell! I love your layered stenciling on the star...your bold color palette is fabulous and star-embossed background is perfect! I also love the effects of Gesso Resist on the ferns and dragonfly!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for playing along with us at CAS Stencil...we always enjoy seeing your creations in our gallery! Hugs, Barb xx
Hey sis - love your bright yellow stenciled star with the little blue ones scattered on top! AND then embossed stars for added texture! Love your gessoed leaf stem with the pretty colors - and a repeat with the lovely whisper of a dragonfly - a beautiful collection - and what great help you received from Hammy! Your cartoon made me laugh - I'm not one for crowds anyway (we would go to matinee movies with 4 others in the theater in days gone by!) I feel just like these people when I see two others walking toward me as I walk around the block - I run to the other side of the street! Stay well! and thanks for joining us at CAS Stencil! xx
ReplyDeleteThis is such a beautiful technique! Absolutely stunning. What a soft yet striking card for our monochrome challenge. Thanks for playing along with Seize the Birthday.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Gesso Stenciled fern and colored with your DOX inks. Love the pretty die cut alcohol ink sentiment and stitched border too. TFS and joining us at STAMPlorations Stencil. Love and Hugs..Nancy
ReplyDeleteP.S. TFS your other 2 beautiful cards too:-)
Great collection of cards, Darnell! Love the added strips at the bottom of the fun star card! Your gesso makes are fabulous! I tried it, but used spray mists--not a lot of success. Next I'll blend inks.
ReplyDeleteWOW! Darnell, your cards are stunning! The last two of the gesso delighted me especially because it is also my favorite colors. I love the delicate drawing on both of these cards.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
BożenA
Love the subtle look of the dragonfly and the colours you've used. Thanks for playing with us this month at AAA Birthday.
