A Sponger Gone Mad!

If you are looking for my NBUS Challenge #4, click HERE
March 21-March 31, 2015
Thank you to everyone who has already played!

Hi Gang!

I hope you are enjoying your weekend! We are having more gorgeous weather here. We skipped right over spring and went to summer, which could be very ominous for future temps and the drought, but right now with everything blooming and the hills still green, we are enjoying it to the max, Max.

So. Now I'm a sponging maniac. No, not really. But I have had this fun NBUS paper from SU on my desk to use for a couple three months. It's got emboss resist built right into it, so it's made for sponging. And there are a couple of Christmas challenges I want to enter, so I sponged a Christmas tree on it.
I learned from other blogs and the Online Stretch Your Dies class that you can use your dies to make your own stencils. I cut a die using my PTI christmas tree die and then used the negative to sponge the tree in SU wild wasabi and TH evergreen bough inks.

The sediment is from My Sentiments Exactly (DD302) and I inked it with red Stazon, hoping it won't schmear. I haven't tested it yet. I guess if it does schmear, someone will end up getting a Christmas card that says H li  y  ap  nes  t   ou!

Challenges
~~~
Of course, I made a second card while I was at it. I tried to make another Christmas card using a wreath negative, but on the emboss resist paper there was too little of it that took ink so the image looked like a bed raggled I-don't-know-what.
I started over and made a birthday card. Remember I showed you those ancient stencils I found:
I sponged the balloon in the upper left of the above photo:
I used one of the other stencils to make the "string." Different, huh? The sediment is from PTI "Bigger Blooms."
As I was taking the photo, the breeze blew over my card and I thought, "Well, would you look at that?" You look. If I used this same balloon and string, only upside down, I could make a card that looked like one of those old-fashioned cartoon bombs!
You'd have to flip your sediment, too, of course. Do you see it? Or am I a sponger gone mad?
This post amuses me because there are some readers who just look at the pictures (no judgment) and if you came here today and just looked at the pictures, what must you think?
Here are closeups of the cards where the sunlight captured the sheen of the emboss resist leaf pattern built into the paper. It's very pretty IRL.
Yay for you! Great use of your resist paper on this nifty tree. I'm reading that so many of you enjoyed that class and wishing I had decided to take it. (I'm homework challenged, and we've been sorta busy is why I didn't). Your tree is delightful,ditto your ornament & the bomb. I look at the pictures, but I get just as big a kick out of reading the post as seeing the pics! Love the way you are gung ho on these stencils (now don't take that the wrong way. Ya know whadImean, yeah?) Delightful cards, great post. Big hugs. TFS
I love the way these turned out -- the photo showing the overall pattern sheen is lovely. I took the same OCC class and learned so much (as I do every time in these classes). And the bomb is too funny.
Very cool paper! Love both your tree and balloon cards. And even the bomb one is adorable, although I'd have to stand on my head to read the sediment. :) You are a sponger gone mad ... so happy to see you enjoying this technique! Lolly xx
Beautiful cards Darnell. I was trying to think of a great sentiment for the "bomb" that you could use in a future creation. "You're the bomb" is the only one that comes to mind but it would be kinda fun! Have a great day Darnell.
Darnell....this technique looks fabulous - the leaves stand out beautifully and simple sponging through a stencil and wellla a love card.
Hehe, visitors that only look at the pictures will certainly wonder Darnell, but the bomb would be perfect for a guy or boy.
The sponging is gorgeous, I need to try that technique too, it's very clever way to stretch the dies.
That emboss resist paper is really cool! Love the sponged negatives - such a clever way to create a focal point. The cartoon bomb is definitely the way to go though....it blew me away :)
Marianne said...
Oh, I love these, Darnell, and you have just giving me a brainwave on how to get even more out of my tree dies. I have already created some cards using the negative space of my die (will be posting them soon and link to your NBUS challenge as well), but of course I could also use it as a stencil on top of a different stencil. Wish there were more hours in a day, sigh.
Have a wonderful Sunday!
Haven't tried this Stretch Your Dies technique...clearly I have to. Like this resist paper, too. Looks lovely even in the pics. Guess you could call your 2d card a "photo bomb". (Sorry, I couldn't resist. Get it!) Enough of that. Seriously, I love the way both cards look. You've inspired me today. Thanks.
Morning Darnell, your sponged holiday designs are wonderful. I have no talent using ink, it usually looks like something a 3 year old did.
Love your cards Darnell! That paper is so cool! You did a great job on sponging! Once you get the hang of it, it's kinda fun, isn't it? The bomb is hilarious. You need to make a card using it, and come up with a great sediment for it too! And I admit, I often only look at the pictures on some blogs, but I always read yours! You are too witty and clever not to read!! I know I will always leave smiling when I come to visit you! Today is no exception!
Your sponging is fabulous! I love the colors, too.
Oh, what a fun post! The sponging gal emerges with a bang :)
Love your stenciled shapes over the emboss resist! Your tree is so very elegant and your bomb...I should say birthday balloon is terrific! They turned out so beautifully stenciled . So very clever Darnell to use the stencils over that ER. What great vision!
I have some old stencils that I must look at more closely. I know my husband had and old stencil out the other week from computer flow chart days and I said, wow, where did you get that? He told me it was an antique and I shouldn't have any "paint" ideas for it...I thought it had some pretty neato shapes on it :)
I love Kim's arrangement and that colour theme of red, black and blue would make for a great challenge.
I am kicking myself for not getting some of this paper when I had my party! Your cards are so pretty Auntie! I love the Christmas tree and good for you for thinking back to the class to make your own stencil from your die, it turned out fabulous! I also love the balloon with the string and yes, I am seeing the cartoon bomb too. lol These papers are so beautiful and I'm glad you captured the look of them the way you did in your 4th picture. That's a great picture of you ladies, looks like another great outing! If I send some water your way will you send some warm temps to us?! lol We had snow flurries on Saturday, pretty heavy at times but thankfully it didn't lay. But boy was it cold! Hugs, Brenda
Hi Darnell,
This is the second time today I've seen this interesting pre-embossed paper. I can't believe I got left out of that loop. Such fun cards, both of them... I mean all three of them including the cartoon bomb. That cracked me up. Mad sponger indeed! Don't come near me with a sponge or else I might ask you to clean up after the cat hairballs. (Still haven't taught hubby the difference between the kitchen sponge and the 'gross stuff' sponge).
