Peek-a-Boo Ribbon ~ MMCC #90; WOYWW #240

Hello!  You are looking really good today!

Doesn't that startle you a little bit when people say that to you?  I mean, they mean well, and while my first reaction is always to say, "Thank you!," my next thought is wait, what?  What do I normally look like?

It's time again for What's On Your Workdesk? Wednesday (WOYWW), hosted by the piquant Ms. Julia Dunnit, who has all the hop details on her blog waiting for you to join in the fun!

~~~
I think the nasty weather in the UK and half the USA, which is keeping a lot of children home from school, is still keeping Blogland quiet after the holidays. My heart and prayers go out to everyone being impacted by all the flooding, snowing, and freezing temperatures.
As for me, I've had the Mister home for an entire two weeks because his work shuts down over the holiday.  It's been a real treat having . . . oh, stop!  I just can't bold-face lie to you like that!
Let's just say we both realize that he MUST figure out a hobby for himself in the next two years before he fully retires or one of us will be living out our days in a jail cell.  I'm not saying it will be me, but I'm hoping they have arts 'n crafts and blogging in prison.  Cough.  I'm telling you this because having the big darling home distracting me is the reason I haven't been able to visit you like normal.  Sorry.
You can imagine, then, that I was whistling happily on Monday morning while I was making up his lunch for him to take to work.  Just as I zipped it up, planning a normal day for myself, he slouched through the kitchen doorway with a full-on-miserable COLD! Who knows how long it will last . . .
Bless his heart.
I don't want you to think I went out to the Playhouse and had a temper tantrum . . .
Afterwards, I spent some quiet time just rocking and sketching to calm the frantic hamster in my head.
No, I didn't.  Picasa sketched that.  When I was little I always dreamed of being able to sketch like that so I'm quite mesmersized at how I can make that happen just by clicking a button on my computer.
To get something creative done, I decided to join in the current Merry Monday Christmas Challenge, where we are to use ribbon or twine on our cards.  This will be my first Christmas card of 2014 and I'm quite proud of myself for not waiting until June to start like I did last year.
BTW, you will now find the Merry Monday Christmas Challenge at its own website!!  The link will take you there for all the details.  Two new and extremely talented card artists have joined the already sensational Design Team so it's a wonderful resource for you!
My ribbon card is not at all what I had imagined.  I got really stumped on that one after twenty-sixteen tries and gave up.  Then I remembered I had seen on Pinterest and on blogs that some of you were covering your negative hearts with ribbons (boy, that would sound completely weird to a noncardmaker!).  Here is an example of one made by Petra.
So that's what I did behind the negative die cut on this ancient SU blank card in order to turn it into a wee Christmas card.
Here is the inside before I covered it with another piece of card stock.
I distressed the edges with a cube of PTI pine feather ink and added a button tied with thread and topped with an enamel dot.  None of it is NBUS today. Well, except for the button.
 ~~~

In Our New Friends corner, I am pinkled tick to introduce you to Sally H. of Crafty Salutations.  Sally has been making cards since, hello! the eighties!, stamping since 1997!, and blogging since 2008!!  If you have some time or are snowed in and snuggled up for a while, this is where you want to start fishing the webnets!  Here is your opportunity to enjoy the full card artist extraordinaire experience and have inspiration oozing out of your pores in no time!!

Welcome, Sally, and thank you so much for joining us!!

~~~
My throat feels kinda sore now which serves me right for being a horrible wife. Please don't write and tell me how much I would miss him after I killed him.  I know I would.  Truly.  But the dude still needs to get a hobby.
Enjoy your day!  No, seriously, enjoy.  LITS!*
As always, thank you for coming by to visit the Playhouse and special thanks to you if you take the time to leave a comment and/or join as a follower!  Please let me know you came by, so I can be sure and return the flavor!
Is it possible to get a cold remotely?! I think I am getting something..but it could be the freezing temps here in NYC. I LOL at your assessment of you and Hubby in the same space for an extended period of time. I am fortunate my Hubster has hobbies!! Love that sketch function, I use it a lot. Try befunky.com for free photo editing, its fab. I swooned at the cleverness and beauty of your card. Have a good day. Cx #25
I TOTALLY sympathise, Darnell - thank heavens my hubby is model plane enthusiast which gets him out of the house (since retirement) on virtually EVERY fine day, otherwise we might just be in orange in adjacent cells!
Hope you aren't coming down with the Misters cold.
FYI changed my web browser to chrome and can now visit with you whenever I want as opposed to when I have the patience (with I.E.11)
HAPPY 2014
Hi there. I can completely understand where you are coming from re Mr!!! My own DH retired 4 years ago he does read so I got him to join a 'friends of the library' group but could do with them meeting more often!! He likes walking but won't join a group!!! Consequently he is often wanting to know'what are you doing ... do you want to???? 'No I want to craft!!!! Bless him - would miss him though now if he was still at work. Yesterday he played with GD no. 2 while I did some crafting that was urgent - yes it was :-) Great ribbon card and ha given me some inspiration for a card using ribbon I have to do for a swap.
Oh my word I've written a lot- sorry. Happy WOYWW Anne x #41
Hi Darnell
oh girl you do make me laugh I think you need to find a hobby for your DH that takes him outdoors or away from the house otherwise I will be a visitor smuggling things in to prison for you.
You poor craft room floor does look like you had a bit of a wobble out there.
Love the ribbon card
Have a great WOYWW today and enjoy the rest of your week
Oh I can always rely on you dear Darnell for a giggle in the morning! Since Mister loves his motorbike, perhaps he could build one of his own - that would keep him busy! I guess I am lucky, my Mister's hobbies keep him downstairs/outside whilst mine keeps my busy upstairs in my craft room.
I love that negative element card, it is fabulous with the beautiful ribbon behind and you have done some distressing around the edges - woohoo! Love it!
Big hugs, Annie xx
LOL! A brilliant post as always and I'm so glad someone else feels the same way. I love Luis to death but we both drive each other nuts after a few too many days together! And I really hate it when he's off work on one of MY days at home! LOL!
As for your card - gorgeous! I love the ribbon you chose and that pattern is so pretty! Very cool. And I love that carmakers have our own secret language. ;)
Love your ribbon inside the die cut and the sponged edges, Darnell! I hope Mr feels better soon. Have an awesome day!
Hi Darnell - totally get what you mean about the hobbyless hubby scenario- mine drives me mad when he's off work too! LOVE that Christmas card - what a brilliant idea and your colours work so well - I'm guessing you're going to be the winner of the most organised for Christmas 2014 prize! Have a good week. MMx #56
Darnell, I pray you hubby feels better real soon and that you don't get what he has. I was smiling all the way through your post. :)
Love your card today too! I have been wanting to try out this technique too but haven't gotten to it just yet. You have inspired me to do so soon. Thank you so much for joining us for Merry Monday. I always enjoy seeing your cards and visiting your blog.
Oh I hear you!! I laughed my socks off reading this ... even read bits to my DH so he knows it's not just me!! Mine now has football (watching of course) Golf ... and he has taken 2 classes at our local library ... still he manages to drive me insane ... Wonder if we could be transferred to the same prison?
Love your card!!
Colleen Dietrich said...
Oh yes, hubbies need hobbies. Unfortunately, mine has hobbies that aren't around the house, which he can dive into whenever the mood strikes. His involve money spent on golf fees, or skiing fees, or gun range fees. This means we need the extra $$ for him to go, and that said places need to be open, and this ain't always the case. :(
Love your plaid ribbons behind the cutout! Oh, and Happy New Year!
You crack me up Darnell!! It is frigid cold here in TO, schools never close. Apparently we should be adept to this weather. Yesterday exposed skin had 5 minutes before frost bite--Yikes! Hey I'm tough, so it's all good. Now husbands home, yes difficult, my hubs was home most of two years when he was looking for a new job. He is lucky he headed across the country for his new job so I could decide if he could come back!! I love your MM card, super creative! ~hugs
I can sympathize Darnell, and only have till this March before my hubby retires! And he has a hobby and yet there's still a part of me dreading him being home day after day after day after...... But anyway, I adore your card this week! What a great idea and I will definitely have to try that! :0)
Hope hubby gets over his cold soon and doesn't share it. Maybe he could take up golf. Fresh air and exercise and fun buddies. Hiking, woodworking or fishing? Good luck!! Love the ribbon you used on your card. That's a great idea to use ribbon behind the cutout.
As long as Mister doesn't decide that paper crafting is the way to go and then wants to play in the playhouse with you all day. hahahahahahaha OK, I'm just kidding. I know exactly what you mean. I love my husband and my daughter dearly. They are my heart. But I can't get five uninterrupted minutes to do anything when we're all home! I like your Christmas card -- thanks for sharing the challenge blog. It sure would be great to have all my cards done, one at a time, before the next holiday season. Hope you're getting time to play today. Love ya'! ~ Laura #73
LOL! Boy do I know how your feeling. My Mr. was home too, and couldn't wait for him to go back to work. A jail sentence was starting to look good to me. I keep telling him he will NOT like retirement (well it's really me that won't like him to retire LOL) So you have my prayers for your DH to feel better soon.
Your card is stunning, what a clever idea!
What a lovely idea for a card, Darnell and I like you think I will try to keep up with the Christmas cards throughout the year instead of leaving it to the last minute. My DH is retired but luckily does usually have things to keep him busy. We only have quite a small space here so we do get under one another's feet sometimes, but we cope ok. Hope you don't get DH's cold. x
Right there, baby! I'm with ya. The problem with my getting a week off work for the holidays is hubby takes the same week off. UGH! Ruins it right there. I mean I like him and all but I don't want to have to put up with him all the time. And um... are you *sure* you didn't go to your playhouse and have a temper tantrum? I'm just saying it looks like a small snit may have been had. I hope you don't catch the bug. I thought I was on the mend until I went to the doctor this morning for a followup appt. Now I feel worse... go figure that one. I think I just may check out this Merry Christmas challenge place thingy website bloggo thing so I too can get the Christmas card making happening sooner than late November. I have 3 done already so lookit me on a roll.
I love the die you put the ribbon behind and the inking around the card. As for husbands, mine has been retired for 19 years. Fortunately he likes old movies so he lies on the couch while I craft away in my own little room.
Darnell my darling you've just made me (and a whole other bunch of WAGS by the looks of it!) feel much better about waiting for my DOH to get out of MY house! Ha ha! I feel terrible for dreading him having a day off because I feel bad about disappearing upstairs to my desk and leaving him downstairs, alone and bored! I really thought I was evil, but it's ok if everyone else is too :)
This card is just stunning! I love it! Really clever take on the ribbon theme too girl! ;) I reckon you could also post it over at Addicted To CAS too because they're challenge is 'die cut' ;)
I hope that Mister feels better soon (and leaves you in peace!!) I do hope prisons have arts n crafts, for all our sakes! ;)
Hi Darnell,
Oh, you crack me up! I don't have a mister so wouldn't need to worry about one having to come up with a hobby - to keep ME sane! Luckily you live where it's mostly warm and a garage workroom would be perfect! Get him a knife and a piece of wood so he can get the hang of whittling (sp?).
The card is very pretty - a clever idea for ribbon.
Happy WOYWW
What a FUN post. Thank heavens my sweetie has taken up a video game in the winter and golf in the summer...whereas I am guaranteed time in the Fun Room. But on a regular, and in fully retired, time schedule we need to find him something else. It was funny, we had all the kids home over Christmas, in our new, smaller, downsized house. We were both VERY happy to have a little escape place for a moment or two of peace. Goodness, those grown kids can be, well, let's just say dramatic!!
Can't believe you are making Christmas cards already....I wish you the best of luck, but I need bit a breathing room. My card stock however is getting thin so maybe I could just make cards for a while.
Hope you have a great, creative week. Sara j #92
IHi Dippydo......... What can I say except I just love your card and the ribbons you've used. It looks like a Union Jack!!! As you haven't mentioned a die I presume the card was already diecut? Shame, it's a lovely shape. Now where do I start about men and their hobbies??? Think I would have been sectioned by now if Tony didn't have his garage, wood turning, woodwork, making all kinds of things! We meet up for breakfast, lunch and dinner (and various times during the day) - it's great. So how about you look around for some classes for him? Could be anything he's shown the slightest bit of interest in! Then just keep your fingers crossed............good luck! Hehe
Hugs.
... a hobby....ah yes....watching TV is not a hobby (at least in my books). Kitties bought DH a puzzle at Christmas - a REALLY hard puzzle...he is now quiet as a mouse as he puzzles over the puzzle.
Fabulous card! I LOVE the inking! And what an incredible idea to use up the "wee" stash of ribbon that we all so carefully hoard!
The button, thread & enamel dot combo - sheer genius with a Wow factor that is off the charts! Sooooo creative dear friend!
I love the cut out shape, and the wonderful plaid ribbon behind it. The inked edges are the perfect finishing touch too! Hope he feels better soon. You can always call me and vent! Bev
So much better in fact he was roaming around in Office Depot this week and found holiday Washi Tape marked down from $5.00 for 4 rolls to just a dollar and he brought me home 4 packages, gotta love that! First I have to say thank you for noticing how good I looked today. I spent hours getting all gussied up (by that I mean combing my hair...maybe!) but thank you for noticing - ha ha!
Second, I think I have a serious injury - broken ribs for sure from laughing so hard about Mister, and probably a broken leg too from when I fell over in hysterics! Oh I can SO relate! My husband works shift work, so I get a fair amount of much needed "me" time. The other day, he mentioned that he may be switching over to straight days if he gets a promotion. PANIC. I could barely breathe. Get me a paper bag! He will be home ALL THE TIME!!! I might be joining you at the craft table in the big house!!
And of course, the card - OH MY, LOVE! The texture peeking through the "window" is gorgeous and the distressed edges are just perfect, adding to the pretty rustic look...happy sigh!
I am laughing too hard about you and your hubby. Thank GAWD mine is into computers and computer games which keeps him out of my hair. The darling also bought himself a huge sailboat so he can take off when he finally retires. I just hope he doesn't sink the darn thing since he doesn't have a clue how to sail. I think he had a male menopause moment when he bought the darn thing. If someone says that at least he didn't get himself a sports car. Guess what?? He has one of those things too. It's been parked in the garage for the last nine years. Needless to say it's stopped running. AND he has a Honda Goldwing motorbike. Which does run, at least in the summertime. My man has more big boy toys than he knows what to do with. Have a wonderful day Darnell.
Loved your post. Had several giggles. First after 20 years in law enforcement, you need to know. You can't have sharp objects in jail, so cutting with those plastic kid scissors isn't fun! That's what keeps me smiling when I'm spending 24/7 with my retired honey! Yes, he needs a craft and you need to find him one. I found Bob Ross painting for my husband. He's now a certified instructor and he is kept plenty busy....Gotta love crafting!
Always a treat, Darnell, always a treat to stop by the playhouse, sit back, and be entertained. My husband was off for the last 3 weeks of the year (lots of vacation that had to be used). Then everything was ready to get back to normal on Monday and the cold cancelled school and work. Today was the first day of everyone going back to their respective work. Got lots done! Your card is amazing with the ribbon behind it. Gorgeous!!
Love the card, Darnell! Love the ribbon peeking through. I understand completely when you say Mr needs a hobby and is distracting you. I really think that sometimes they do it on purpose. Why do they love to annoy us so much??! LOL. Thanks for the beautiful Christmas card you sent. Imagine my delight to see the poinsettia that I stamped for you! :-). You did a fantastic job with it. Hope your Christmas was good and your new year is shaping up to be a great one. Hugs!
Oh my, I need to recompose myself, after having rolled on the floor in hysterical laughter, gathering some dust due to the performance and mussying up my oh so coiffed hair (thank you for noticing that I look good today). Hilarious post! Thank heavens my husband has a bike (or several) to strap himself on to whenever he has some free time, because having him around full time would see me bonkers! I'd even forego some craft money to buy him a hobby if need be, or have someone build him his own 'space' (that doesn't require renovations, because we've discovered that he's not quite the handiman he envisions himself to be. It's okay; the ceiling will dry after the leak...). Even though he's a gem, too much 'closeness' is too much! Whistling a happy tune while making Mister's lunch...oh my, see, dropped on the floor again with peals of laughter. The students are giving me strange looks...Your card is brilliant! Getting the giggles again....Hugs~c
I know that I say this all the time, but it's true: It is SO MUCH FUN to visit your blog, Darnell! It's also no wonder 70+ other bloggers think so, too :-)
I love the ribbon you chose for your negative die cut...it's perfect with the Kraft card base, and your inking is the perfect touch! Congrats on your 1st Christmas card for 2014!!!
My hubby is retired, and I begged him to get a hobby beforehand, but he didn't, and here we are! The highlight of his day is running to Walmart to buy yet another item we DON'T NEED!!! The moral of the story is for him to get started on a hobby before he retires, and then he won't need to wonder what he might like to do...just a thought from little ol' me! Thanks so much for another great post...and for making me smile :-)
I love Colleen's phrase, "hubbies need hobbies"! You could start an international campaign, Hobbies for Hubbies. Oh wait, you already have judging by all these comments ;) Fortunately mine's into cooking, so I get more play time.
Gorgeous card. Love how you've backed the diecut aperture with the ribbon. Reminds me of a union jack.
I am so impressed Darnell, it is barely two weeks into January and you have already made a Christmas card. Love the end result, really pretty with the ribbon showing through the negative die cut.
My hubby's hobbies are guitars and motor bikes so I have plenty of time for me. Hope your Mister is soon feeling better and back to work.
Hugs x
Great card -- fun post -- my husband's hobby is car --he has one old car, and several friends that just hang out talking about cars, and fixing them -- I never understood it, until I found stamping -- Your mister will find something! . . . hopefully :)
PS thanks for visiting my blog -- work just keeps me too busy for crafting and commenting -- but I do read every post you post.
I empathize with you of DH staying home! When mine retired I thought we would end up in a divorce court but he went out and got a part time job at the university! His grant runs out this year so he may end up being home full time...Love the card. GOod job! I didn't get cards done and was a lazy but and didn't send any out. Hope you have a great week and craft a lot! Vickie #104
Love the ribbon backed negative!! I joke that my dear husband's work is his hobby, but am thankful that he can spend as much time puttering in the garage or garden as I do in the craft room. Hope you do not get his cold!
I hope you're not catching what Mister has ~ I hope he is feeling better also. Sorry I have been MIA lately. My son was off of school two days this week for the cold ~ 40 something below with the wind chill. It's supposed to get up in the 30's this weekend. I can guarantee people will be out with shorts on and no jackets ;). It will feel like a heat wave though. Oh,yeah ~ love your card ~ it's quite striking with the ribbon behind the die cut space. I am sure you already know this, but you can also use washi tape in the same way as the ribbon.
I am laughing laughing at your post, you sound just like me, I also had my Mr. home during the 2 weeks, and on Monday when he went back I called my Mom and asked her if she could hear the happy dance of the rumble on the roof....no it wasn't elephants it was ME!!!
I do love your very creative card, and thanls for reminding me of that challenge, I have to do it, I NEED those cards now and not 2 days before I want to mail them, or is it one day...anywho, thanks for heads up!!
Great card Darnell. The colors in the ribbon really show up well against the kraft and I like how you sponged the edges! Thanks for playing Merry Monday this week!
What a great, fun post Darnell, and judging from the responses, we all have the same issues! My hubby has been around the house too much lately because he isn't well enough to do his normal hobbies, and although he is a sweetie, I just sometimes need time totally alone!!!! so a small spot of solitary confinement in that prison might be what the doctored ordered.
Love the ribbon card and the tartan pattern makes it so Christmassy!
A lovely card, Darnell. I would not have thought of using ribbons in that way. As far as finding a way to cope when your husband retires, find things you can do together and other things that you do separately so that you have lots to share when you are together. then live every moment to the full and make lots of happy memories together. Thank you for your visit today. I am still working my way round the gang as far as I can. Have a good week. xx Maggie #24
Hi Darnell,
Hope hubby's feeling better now. I know exactly what you mean about them being around the house ..... it's nice for a while but ...... say no more!!
I've just found the MM blog challenge and it looks like fun. Love your pretty little ribbon card and the button in the centre is sooo cute!
Thank you for your lovely comments on my blog - you can share my M&Ms anytime! xx
I suppose I am lucky my DH has a hobby and it drives me nuts at how much time he is away from the house and family, there needs to be a compromise of some kind. But to say that I don't like it when he is home, well we both do shift work and to be home is a blessing believe me sometimes it is all you want. I don't understand how women can be put off by there space being invaded. They do eat into our time a little. Maybe I am lucky but also unlucky.
Nice creative mess on the floor. Oh I hope you are not getting that cold, it's not good when people share their germs.
Thanks for visiting, sorry I am the slack on this week, being at work and trying to manage many things is not easy sometimes. But hey the Aussie are winning.
Hugs Eliza & Yoda 32
Happy belated WOYWW
I love how your card turned out - that buttony bow is perfect, and OMG the negative snowflake! Genius :)
I hope you didn't end up also getting the cold. I really hear you on the mister needing a hobby - even a week off work turns my husband into another child. MOM I'M BORED. No, I don't want to do that, nope, not that either. Nah, I don't feel like it...OMG we wouldn't survive being together full-time either!
This whole post had me cracking up & doing the happy dance ,,!!
You mean I'm not the only one who wants to hurt my hubby when he is home for too long... ??!! Lol !! Good to know !!!
That sketch --oh my gosh !?
I thought you did draw it for about 5 seconds til I read on... It's amazing !!!!!
Your card is ingenuous (which we already knew!) -- the end result is soooo unique & fun & gorgeous !!!!
I've added it to my mental arsenal !!!
I'm also sending you a huge HIGH 5 because I have sooooooooo much ribbon from when I used to make the girls hair bows!!!! 1000s & 1000s of yards !!! Thanks for helping me to think of another use!!!
Hello Darnell, I hope that sore throat hasn't morphed into a full-blown cold now and that hubby has recovered enough to go back to work - before you do kill him!!! Finding a hobby before he retires is an essential ... time spent apart is the secret of a happy marriage in my opinion :) Love the card - what a great way of using ribbon. I am so with you on the husbandly hobbies. Mine has none. Not only because it keeps them from being underfoot but it also helps with the acceptance of crafty purchases. I have a crafty friend whose husband restores old cars. She can come home with any size craft purchase and it is small in comparison to his expenses.
I don't remember those SU cards - but I wish I had some. I love your holiday card - but could also go with pink ribbon or yellow ribbon or all kinds of choices for various needs.
